Stay Informed with the Harris County Flood Warning System

June 2, 2026 7:37 pm

In the Houston area, heavy rainfall and flash flooding can develop quickly. That’s why the Harris County Flood Control District created the Harris County Flood Warning System — a free online tool that helps residents monitor rainfall, bayou levels, and potential flood conditions in real time.

The system uses a network of more than 200 gage stations throughout Harris County and incorporates data from more than 350 regional monitoring sites. These gages track rainfall totals, water levels in bayous and streams, and other weather conditions to provide up-to-date information during storms and tropical weather events.

What Information Can Residents Access?

The Flood Warning System website allows users to:

  • View real-time rainfall totals across the region
  • Monitor bayou and creek water levels
  • Track storms using interactive maps
  • Review historical flood and rainfall data
  • Access inundation maps showing possible flood impacts
  • Sign up for customized text and email alerts

The data is used by residents, emergency management agencies, meteorologists, and the National Weather Service to help assess flood risks and make informed decisions during severe weather.

Customized Flood Alerts

One of the most useful features of the system is the ability to receive personalized alerts. Residents can subscribe to notifications for specific bayous, creeks, or locations important to them — such as their neighborhood, workplace, or commute route.

Alerts can be sent by text message or email when rainfall or water levels reach certain thresholds. The system is designed to provide near real-time updates so residents can stay aware of changing conditions during storms.

Why Flood Awareness Matters

Flooding remains one of the most common and dangerous natural hazards in the Houston area. Localized street flooding and rapidly rising bayous can occur even during short-duration storms.

The Flood Warning System was first established in 1982 and has expanded significantly over the years to improve regional flood monitoring capabilities. Today, the system plays a critical role in helping protect lives and property throughout Harris County.

Officials encourage residents to use the system as part of their storm preparedness plan, especially during hurricane season and periods of heavy rainfall.

Safety Reminders During Flooding

  • Never drive through flooded roadways.
  • Monitor weather forecasts during heavy rain events.
  • Have multiple ways to receive emergency information.
  • Sign up for flood alerts before severe weather develops.
  • Know evacuation routes and safe areas near your home.

Even a few inches of moving water can be dangerous. Staying informed early can help residents make safer decisions during rapidly changing weather conditions.
